U.S. Sens. call for DOJ to block mega mergers
A number of leading U.S. Senators have called for the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to block the proposed Anthem-Cigna and Aetna-Humana mergers.
In a June 22 letter to DOJ, the senators say that they believe the mergers will “increase premium prices and health care costs for consumers and businesses, reduce competition and consumer choice, and decrease access to quality of care.”
They also stress that, “Past health insurance mergers have led to significant premium increases for the consumers of the merging companies…[and consolidation] is also linked to lower-quality insurance products, less innovation, and higher patient mortality rates.”
Finally, the Senators point out that, “These mergers would take place against the backdrop of an already concentrated insurance market.”
